Types of Pool Fences We Install

While Texas state laws about pool fences don’t require private residential pools to install pool fences or barriers, most families don’t realize that children below five years of age are most susceptible to drowning, and that these incidents often happen in a pool owned by a family member.

More than just complying with state laws, getting pool fences installed within your residential or commercial property will ensure that accidental drownings and pool injuries are minimized. And since there are different types available, you can pick from the following pool fences we install:

Iron

Iron pool fences are perhaps the sturdiest, most durable type of pool fence, offering heavy-duty protection no matter the season. For the safety-conscious homeowner or commercial pool owner, iron fences come fully welded and are denser than aluminum pool fences.

In addition to their functionality, iron pool fences are also decorative with their classy and elegant appearance.

Different Parts of Iron Pool Fences

  • Fence panel: Safety fence panels are made of top and bottom rails that serve as anchors for the pickets, which act as the fence barriers. Each picket is welded to both the top and bottom rails, and are spaced roughly 4 inches apart. A standard safety fence panel is typically affixed with 20 pickets apiece over a length of 8 feet. Safety fence panels should be at least 4 feet in height to comply with Texas pool fence laws.
  • Fence post: This is located at the end of each fence panel, keeping them firmly in place. The height of the fence post would depend on the overall height of the fence panels. A special hardware known as the “sleeve” or “bracket” attaches the post to the top and bottom rails of the fence panel through the use of screws or a weld.
  • Fence gate: This part of your iron pool fence lets you access the pool. Like fence posts, the gates should match the height of the surrounding fence. For child safety, our gates for iron fence posts feature self-closing and self-latching mechanisms.

Aluminum

Lightweight and easy to maintain, aluminum pool fences are a lighter alternative to iron pool fences. However, that doesn’t mean that they’re any less durable. Aluminum pool fences can withstand extreme weather just as well as iron pool fences can. They’re also low-maintenance as they won’t chip, crack, or peel, thus needing little to no repairs over time.

In comparison with other fence types like wood or iron, aluminum pool fences are not easily susceptible to rust, rot, bow, decay, and wear. This makes them a cost-effective pool fencing solution.

Moreover, aluminum pool fences can be installed in both level ground or slopes.

Mesh

Mesh pool fences might not look durable at first glance, but this material actually makes for a great pool fence as their stability relies on tension. Tension is what keeps this type of pool fence standing strong while also being easy to install and remove within a matter of minutes. In fact, our mesh pool fences can be put up and removed by a single adult even without the use of tools.

What also makes this option popular is that mesh pool fences allow adults to easily supervise their kids as their view is unobstructed. At the same time, both pets and children alike won’t be able to knock down mesh pool fences because of the aforementioned tension that keeps them sturdy.

Different Parts of Mesh Pool Fences

  • Mesh Fabric: As its name suggests, the mesh fabric is the part of the mesh pool fence that’s made of weaved mesh material. Holding it together is the binding edge or border.
  • Poles: Since mesh pool fences rely on tension to withstand exterior force, having sturdy poles are crucial. Even while under pressure, poles used for mesh pool fences should be able to resist breaking or bending. This is what stops children or even adults from knocking down the mesh pool fence or falling into the pool.
  • Gate: While mesh pool fences are temporary fixtures, gates serve as an easy way for individuals to access the pool without them having to take down the whole fence.

Pool Covers

Much like pool fences, safety pool covers can prevent drowning incidents among children, pets, and adults alike. With its heavy-duty straps and brackets, safety pool covers can generally support 485 pounds to 500 pounds per 5 square feet, allowing children and most adults to walk on them safely, provided the pool covers are properly secured.

Moreover, safety pool covers can also help keep the pool clean, prevent evaporation, preserve the temperature, and seal in the water, thus prolonging the longevity of your pool chemistry. With this, pool care and maintenance are more convenient and ultimately cost-effective in the long run.

Pool Fence Applications

Versatile in nature, there are several applications for pool fences. These include:

  • Pet Pool Fence: This comes in handy for pet owners who don’t have alarm collars for their furry friends, or don’t have pool alarms. Pet pool fences are, in fact, considered generally safer than pool alarms as the former can stop your pet from going into the water. Pool alarms will only alert you when your pet has gone into the water, which means that they can still be at risk of drowning.
  • Toddler Pool Fence: Every year, almost 300 children below 5 drown in swimming pools, which account for 75% of the 390 children below 15 years of age who have drowned. These fatal incidents could have been prevented with the installation of a toddler pool fence.
  • Child Pool Fence: Age and lapse in adult supervision are factors that contribute to the increased risk of children drowning. On a global scale, children among one to four years old are the most at risk of drowning, followed by children five to nine years old. A child pool fence can also help lower the risk of children drowning, if not prevent the incident altogether.
  • Safety Pool Fence: Worldwide, an estimated 320,000 deaths happen annually due to drowning. This makes it the third leading cause of unintentional injury death. Those who are most at risk are, as mentioned, children, as well as males and those with increased access to pools or water.
  • Removable Pool Fence: Residential or commercial pool owners can easily set up or remove this type of pool fence whenever the need or occasion arises.

Benefits of Having a Pool Fence

Safety is, of course, the primary reason you should have pool fences installed. But aside from preventing incidents of drowning among children, pets, and even adults, there are other advantages that you can glean from having a pool fence in your property.

Here are some of them:

Increase Your Property Value

Pool fences come in various designs that won’t only protect the surrounding area of your pool — they can also increase your property’s value by providing a beautiful but functional fixture.

Low Maintenance

Pool fences are generally low maintenance and provide cost-efficient alternatives to pool alarms or automatic pool covers.

Easy to Install and Remove

Removable pool fences, in particular, are easy to install, and removing them takes only minutes for a single adult with no tools.

Quick Facts about Texas State Laws for Pool Fences

Chapter 757 of the State Health and Safety Code outlines Texas pool fence regulations that must be complied with. As mentioned, private residential pools are not required to install safety pool barriers, but these laws do apply to commercial pool owners, or pools within multi-unit rental complexes that are owned or controlled, or maintained by a property owners’ association.

Here are some fast facts about these state regulations:

  • The minimum height for pool fences must be 48 inches or 4 feet.
  • Pool fences must not be constructed out of chain link fences.
  • Gaps in or under these fences must be small enough to prevent the passage of a sphere with a 4-inch diameter. This also applies to any horizontal or vertical slats present in the pool fence.
  • Pool fence gates must be equipped with self-closing or self-latching features. To prevent children from easily accessing these latches, they must be placed inside the gate, on the top quarter.
  • Pool fence gates must also open outward and away from the pool. Likewise, they must be secured by a padlock, keypad lock or card-operated lock, or a combination lock.
